Ericsson Mobile Applications - August 2000-August 2001

Working as a Designer on the Ericsson Graduate Development Scheme, I took part in:

• Design, development and test of Web and WAP applications for a variety of projects, including Ericsson's Web/WAP portal product, using ASP, XML, XSLT, WML, HTML and WMLScript
• Providing support and on-the-job training for colleagues

Since Ericsson Mobile Applications was sold to Aepona Ltd, I have continued my personal and professional development, taking a more active part in:

• Design, development and test of Web and WAP applications using ASP, XML, XSLT, WML, SQL and Java
• Design, development and test of SMS and MMS applications using Java and JSP

I had complete design responsibility for a complex SMS dating application written in Java, where registered users' preferences were compared with the profiles of other users. These profiles were held in memory for performance reasons, and all changes written to a MySQL database. The system was designed to be infinitely scalable, which meant that a user's best matches could be located on any machine in the system. I successfully demonstrated that the system could perform matches across multiple machines.

I also wrote comprehensive test documentation for the H.225 Call Signalling module of a Media Gateway Controller. The MGC was designed to interact with Digital Residential Gateways, bringing IP telephony to Danish users.

McDonald's Restaurants Ltd. - September 1996-August 2000

While attending university, I worked part-time in McDonald's to supplement my student grant. I was Employee of the Month on a number of occasions, and was a finalist for Employee of the Quarter (Scotland Region) within 5 months of joining the company. Through hard work and commitment, I attained the position of Floor Manager within a year.

Air Service Training Ltd. - September 1992-August 1996

Starting as Office Junior, I rapidly progressed to Flying School Records Clerk and later to Operations Assistant. In this position, I was responsible for the day-to-day running of the General Aviation Centre, including allocation of aircraft in a way that maximised their use, and negotiating with the Flying School and the Engineering Department for extra aircraft when required. I also handled substantial quantities of cash.

I later trained as a Rescue Fire Fighter and a refueller, providing weekend cover on a rota basis. My all-round experience meant that, when AST ceased operations in April 1996, I was able to stay on and help set up a new flying club.

Education & Qualifications

• B.Sc. Mechatronics, University of Paisley 2000.
• GCE "O" Level (or Caribbean Examinations Council equivalent): Maths, English, French, German, Geography, Physics, Principles of Business.

Interests

• I hold a Private Pilot's Licence with IMC and Night ratings. As a pilot, I am fascinated by maps, charts, and all forms of navigation.
• I regularly go ten-pin bowling with colleagues, enjoying friendly competition while we help each other improve. At the moment I am trying to be more consistent, and reduce the variation between games. My average is somewhere between 130 and 150, though I have recently scored far out of this range on both sides!
• In my spare time I enjoy 3D computer modelling and raytracing. I am currently developing a personal web site using QuickTime VR, PHP and MySQL. It is intended to provide a means for visitors to walk through the 3D worlds I create, but can also accommodate worlds made by other artists - these worlds can be linked together so that visitors can move seamlessly from one to the next. The site supports multiple languages, and allows visitors to send e-postcards from their favourite locations. It is currently undergoing final testing while I continue to make worlds for it. • I am learning Italian and Spanish, and hope to visit friends in both Italy and Argentina in the next year.
• On occasion, I also enjoy building with Lego.
